CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Work to repair the emergency stopping system at Yeager Airport in Charleston is finally underway.
Construction started Thursday night on the EMAS (Engineered Materials Arrestor System) system.
A US Airways plane was about to take off in January when it slammed on its brakes and slid into the EMAS portion of the runway.
The weather has delayed the replacement process since the system was damaged. Construction should take about eight to 10 days.
Crews will only work from midnight until 6 a.m. during repairs so air travel will not be interrupted.
