CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- With the spirit of spring finally in the air, it’s a perfect time to do a little cleaning.
Sprucing up was made easy in Kanawha County where the annual county-wide cleanup kicked off Saturday.
“Everything you see here, ten years ago, ended up somewhere in the wrong place,” County Commissioner Dave Hardy said.
They give folks a place they can drop off just about everything from tires to furniture and even old appliances with no strings attached.
“In St. Albans, you'd have to pay extra for it to be taken out,” Paul Claridades said. “Here, it's free and it's available, and you can take pretty much everything.”
The trash turns into treasure for the county. They cash in by recycling the scrap metal, but every aspect of the cleanup is proving to be valuable.
“You can't measure what we save in flooding costs by having this program,” Hardy said. “I think the reason is we don't have all this junk blocking up our streams.”
“West Virginia has one of the highest incidents of West Nile and La Crosse, and they are carried by mosquitoes,” Reap Program Manager Greg Rote said. “The more tires we get rid of, the more mosquitoes we get rid of.”
The next county-wide clean up is March 20 at Elkview Middle School.
