HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ)-- A city's money was truly being sent down the river!

A line from a broken water fountain has been dumping water into the Ohio river for years.

The leak was discovered last year at Harris Riverfront Park .

Mayor Kim Wolfe says fresh drinking water was flowing into the river for about four or five years.

"I thought it was a joke at first and then I said how much? And so it was kind of amusing at the time and then it wasn't because when you figure how much money we were spending on one fountain it was unbelievable," Wolfe said.

The old water fountain line has been pouring out treated water and tax dollars.

"It was leaking severely but it was never detected because it was actually leaking into the river so there were no wet spots," Wolfe said.

The water bill is estimated to have doubled to $86,000 for the city in 2008.

The city budget manager says she expects the park's water bill to be drastically lower now that the leak has been fixed.

A former plumbing inspector for Huntington says could this have been prevented.

"They need double check valves all over the city," Lucian Chinn said. "Those are safety precautions for water lines," he said.

Lines that now have been shut off and finally some serious green can be saved.

The mayor says the finance department initiated the inspection of the park and ultimately discovered the leak.

The new administration in our city government solved the problem now let us moved on to more important issues such as: drug testing all welfare recipients of working age and health that receive a check and food stamps! If we have to pay into the system and take a drug test to keep our jobs, welfare recipients should be required to take the hair follicle test, not the urine test it wastes too much water flushing, to receive federal and state benefits. Time to put the able citizens back to work and quit abusing the system. Start testing today and see how many people start a life for themselves and there families, or move saving the State of WV money. It feels good to say "I have a job". Great job city officials for taking action on the water leak, as I stated before.

it's not the water company that needs to be investigated over this, it's the city government.

I'll give you the benefit of a doubt the years through to 2010 raise your allowence to $3.69. Now you can have a meal unstead of a Hotdog from Frost Top, Stewarts, Midway or Dairy Queen (oops left out Hillbilly Hotdog) which ever is closer. On the other hand if the population of Huntington would donate $25 this year, just a one time donation would raise $1,229,625. Food for thought. Start mailing your checks to help Huntington investagate the water company. Fight the increases by showing up to the meetings and saying no! Only a hand full of people were at the last meeting and the hand got dealt by the water company.
