CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Ophthalmologists and optometrists are again facing off at the state Capitol, this time in a public hearing in the House of Delegates.
The two groups of eye care specialists are at odds over a bill that would allow optometrists to perform some types of laser surgery and give injections around the eye.
Ophthalmologists say those procedures should be limited to medical doctors. Although optometrists have doctorate-level degrees, they aren't MDs. One state, Oklahoma, allows optometrists to perform similar procedures.
The bill passed the Senate after a bitter fight. Speakers in the House chamber on Monday traded accusations of misleading claims and scare tactics.
If the measure passes the House Health and Human Resources Committee, it would come before the full chamber for a vote.

@Jack no you are a fool, if optometrists had the same qualifications, had attended the same schooling, and passed the same boards then they would be ophthalmologists and they aren't. What everyone seems to forget is you can't learn surgical technique from a book or a seminar you have to observe, assist, and then perform under supervision before being turned loose on your own.
you people are fools...optometrists go to school for 8 years just like the MD's...go through the same rigorous training and pass the same board exams. MD's are fighting this because of greed and the joe six packs are fighting it because of lack of education
I have been in the ophthalmology field for for about 6 years working. I work for a MD and many of times we see optometrits sending thier patients to us to correct "pink eye". If they cannot diagnois and treat the conjunctivits how in the heck are they going to be able to preform surgery.
