HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A jury has found that several former Cabell County jail employees should have been compensated for unused sick days when their jobs were terminated in 2003.
The jury determined Tuesday that the employees should be compensated because they didn't know the county's policy on unused sick days.
The jail employees were dismissed in 2003 when county jail operations were transferred to the Western Regional Jail.
The amount the employees should get will be decided later.
Cabell County Commissioner Nancy Cartmill says she's disappointed by the verdict and that the commission is considering appealing it.
Cartmill says the commission's attorney had witnesses who gave testimony that there had never been anyone paid for unused sick days when they were dismissed.

I realize the county jail has been closed for many years,I worked there back in the 90's possibly with some of you experienced long timers. I couldn't afford to stay there my starting out yearly pay was under $13,000. Not worth the danger of dealing with prisoners sentenced to life, not small time criminals. I remember a few of the officers renting rooms from other officers to help each other out. I must say I appreciate you officers not using up your sick time and calling off with the blue flu leaving hardened criminals lightly controled. I say good for you, you deserve what you have earned!
sick leave has never been paid in this situation.other workers testified that they knew they would not be paid. it's in the handbook.by the way it is our tax dollars that will now be used to pay for this.maybe the county will raise taxes to cover it. will that make you happy?
yes me the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Those oficers work for poor wages and some even get food stamps. so we know who the rich is the commisson. They could have settled this long befor this but what do they care to wast tax payers money they dont have to pay any out of their pockets do they.
