CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man allegedly driving drunk tried to run from police, leaving a whole lot of destruction in his path.

Around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, a trooper noticed a black Nissan Pathfinder driving erratically. The officer ran the plate number and noticed it actually belonged to a Toyota Celica.

The trooper tried to stop the man, and he exited at the Washington Street Exit in downtown Charleston and started traveling at speeds of 90 mph.

The trooper followed the driver to Sissonville Drive, which is also Route 21, and that's when police say he shut his lights off so that he would not be noticeable to police. He turned on to Falcon Drive. That’s where he hit two parked cars and, as a result, the cars went into two homes.

Eric Fields is now facing several charges of felony fleeing while driving under the influence, felony destruction of property, reckless driving, no insurance and improper registration.

No one was injured during the incident, and the homeowner Mansford Hammonds says the situation could have been a lot more serious.

"In fact the other evening, if it had been there before daylight, a bunch of little kids plays around here up here and down there, and it could have -- had it been at that time -- there could have been some kids killed," Hammonds said.

Wanda Hammonds says that she was scared when she heard the gas line break. She says she grabbed her dog and ran next door.

She said if their truck wasn't parked exactly where it was, she fears her husband would have been hit by Fields while he was in bed.

Now, the couple is just waiting on the gas line to be fixed, and the insurance adjusters to come out and assess the situation.

good citizen i agree with you 100%.but some of you people do not have enough brains to comment about anything.blaming the police for the moron crashing into the car the police didn't tell this guy to run.i'm amazed at people taking the side of a crimanl when clearley this person broke several laws.the trooper was doing what he swore to do as a police officer and thats to uphold the law so good work trooper i hope you get all the law breakers.

It's always the police officer's fault - blah, blah, blah... Let's just give all the rights to criminals. Let's continue kissing their rears and giving wrist slaps so they can keep repeating their crimes with absolutely no repercussions. Whatever! The idiot chose to break the law by driving while drunk and running from the police. He is at fault and no one else, period! Good job, Trooper, you done your job in accordance to code!

My grandpa aways said "shoot first and ask questions later" I don't think he came up with that idea but it was a good one. Did you ever see the movie Judge Dredd with Sylvester Stallone? That's what we need now. I don't mean we want Sylvester Stallone, he's just an actor. I don't even think he does his own stunts.
