HARLAN, Ky. (AP) -- A bronze marker has been unveiled at the site of the Scotia mine disaster in eastern Kentucky.

The Harlan Daily Enterprise reported members of miner's families and officials gathered Tuesday for the unveiling along U.S. 119 in the Oven Forks community of Letcher County.

A pair of explosions 34 years ago killed 26 miners and inspectors.

Methane gas exploded underground on March 9, 1976, killing 15 miners. Two days later, as 10 miners and three inspectors tried to reach the scene of the first explosion, a second methane blast rocked the mine and only two miners reached safety.

Kathy Cress of Cumberland lost her husband John Hackworth in the second explosion when their son was 5 months old. She said the remembrance is long overdue.

The plaque was provided by the Mountain Comprehensive Health Care Corporation.
