UPDATE at 9:30pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Gov. Joe Manchin is calling for an extension to the legislative session to finish the state budget.

The regular session ends Saturday, but lawmakers will be back next week to discuss the budget.

Federal stimulus dollars and a recent change in pension funding has allowed lawmakers to tweak the budget by $248 million. But the budget passed by the Senate on Wednesday still cuts overall state spending by nearly 3 percent from last year.

When the budget is passed, it will take effect July 1. A governor's spokesperson says extending the session or the budget is nothing unusual.

ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Federal stimulus dollars and a recent pension funding change have allowed West Virginia's Senate to tweak the upcoming state budget by $248 million.

But the amended budget bill unanimously passed Wednesday still cuts general revenue spending by $47 million from what the Legislature passed last year.

Gov. Joe Manchin proposed a spending plan that totaled around $11.3 billion. It included $3.7 billion backed by general tax revenues, $525 million from lottery proceeds and $4.3 billion from federal dollars.

The Senate added $266 million in stimulus-related funds, while reducing pension charges to reflect a recent state retirement board decision.

The House Finance Committee also advanced a budget bill Wednesday. The new budget would take effect July 1.

This seems to happen all the time. What a waste of time and money. I agree with Sick &Tired" solution. But it will never happen. These guys get paid before everyone else even when they don't do anything. Oh, and "Cant wait till he's gone", Manchin will be gone when he leaves to take Byrd's place in Washington.

Manchin got a $50,000 raise last year, wounder what he,ll get this year.People you need to open your eyes.Meanwhile they cut overtime in all correctional facilties, which means the inmates are being locked down more which will before to long cause another riot that will injure staff and cost us tax payers millions in damage. But the news covers up the good story's.Anyone that lives close to a correctional facilty watch your back at all times and keep your house and cars locked.

Across the board the state has cut overtime and budget, then why in the world would they extend the legislative session AGAIN? Which means more money paid out! I say the legislation needs to get in and get the job done ON TIME or the legislation works the overage without compensation! Bet they would work together on the next session and be completed on time!
