WVU Study: School Nutrition Improving Throughout West Virginia
Despite West Virginians having a national reputation for unhealthy eating habits, a West Virginia University study finds that school nutrition is actually improving.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Despite West Virginians having a national reputation for unhealthy eating habits, a West Virginia University study finds that school nutrition is actually improving.
One reason is that school cooks statewide are learning about healthier options.
Nancy Ragan has been a cook in the Wayne County Schools system for more than a decade and she has seen big changes in what she cooks, as well as what kids will eat.
"It used to be the kids got a lot of pizza and french fries, hamburgers," she says. "They get a hamburger, they get a baked potato with it or beans or something else (with) more fiber."
A new study at WVU finds schools statewide have made improvements to the school menu as part of the state's Healthy Lifestyles Act of 2005.
Changes also have occurred in the kitchens of Cabell County Schools. The kitchen staff of Central City Elementary will be the central character in celebrity chef's Jamie Oliver's reality show, which will debut later this month on network TV.
Meanwhile, many school kids throughout West Virginia say they are eating more vegetables and drinking more milk.
That's not to say some schools aren't struggling with health issues. The report shows that some districts continue to struggle with mandate physical education standards incorporated in the Healthy Lifestyles Act of 2005.

It wouldn't matter if there was a salad bar at every school in WV. Good eating habbits start at home with the parents. If you put a salad bar and a burger in front of a kid I bet that 9 times out of 10 the kid will pick the burger. If eating habbits don't change at home then they will not change at school. You have to teach your kids to eat well and that teaching should start at an early age.Make them try it and if they won't then put it up until they are ready to try it. They will eat when they get hungry enough I promise.It may seem cruel but at my house that is the way it is and at first my kids didn't want to eat but now they love veggies.Fix on meal and if you don't eat it them I am sorry but you will go hungry.They have to try it a few times and if they still don't like it then that's fine, they don't have to eat if but they will atleast give it a fair chance. And the occasional happy meal if fine..They're kids for goodness sake.Let them be kids. Send them outside to play.
I agree that one of the first things that needs to happen is that kids need more than 20 minutes to eat lunch. Healthy options are a big start, but providing time to actually enjoy them is a huge factor many schools don't consider.
so i went to Cabell Midland High a few years ago when this was starting and i can say from experiance, the food just down right sucks..... no salt ever no barely any ketchup the food portions were so small im was crazy. the state and the BOE's really need to rethink the menu! they should try eating the food the students do with out there salt and pepper that they have in there lunch rooms! Me and my friends ended up taking salt and pepper shakers to school only to have the adminestration take them from us. so yea rethink think the food!!!
