KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Kanawha County Commissioners passed "one of the tightest budgets ever" Thursday night, with several cuts in funding.
Commissioner Kent Carper says this is one of the tightest budgets the county has ever had. It has remained flat from last year, with no new spending, but Carper says there is no growth expected and no new money coming in.
There will be no raises for county employees. Commissioners estimate that will save the county about $580,000. No new employees will be hired.
There will be no new sheriff's vehicles purchased for the fiscal year 2010-2011. That is estimated to save the county anywhere from $200,000 to $300,000.
Commissioners have cut out community contributions which they say will save anywhere from $200,000 to $500,000. They are also limited water projects for a projected savings of $600,000.
Commissioners are also looking ahead and planning out a budget for the next three years.
Commissioner Carper says the county is now saving in one area, jail costs. In February the jail bill was about $280,000, down about $30,000. February was the second month where the county saw savings. Carper says he attributes that to the changed implemented by prosecutor Mark Plants.

No new money coming in? I know my real estate taxes went up this year and no one could tell me why. How about taking some of the county cars away from some of the county "politicos". Several pass me every day on my way to work in the mornings. We'll also see how much is "donated" without taxpayer consent to the Clay Center this year to keep it going.

We need to start inventing in coal. Coal is the backbone of the economy in West Virginia. Many West Virginia use coal everyday. It's used in building structures, it provides jobs, chick's dig it.
