SALYERSVILLE, Ky (WSAZ) -- The start of the growing season is still several weeks away but the demand for marijuana is already here.
Magoffin County Sheriff's deputies busted a very hi-tech indoor pot growing operation Tuesday night in Salyersville. Sheriff Randall Jordan says the two men accused of growing the 54 plants used cameras, computers, lighting equipment, and a sprinkler system set to a timer.
Terry Burchett and Jonathan Deaton were arrested and charged with cultivating marijuana.
Sheriff Jordan said the Burchett and Deaton used video cameras connected to the Internet to watch their operation from another location in Johnson County.
Sheriff Jordan said the pot smelled so strong he could smell it from outside the trailer. Jordan went to the trailer to execute an emergency protective order on Burchett -- that's when he found the hi-tech pot farm.
Burchett had a license to grow marijuana in California, but Sheriff Jordan said that doesn't matter much in Kentucky.
"In California he could grow, but not here in Kentucky," Sheriff Jordan said. "He didn't like hearing that, especially when he went to jail."
The estimated worth of the plants confiscated totaled $216,000.
Both men are being held in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center. Sheriff Jordan said they could face at least ten years in prison.

Those of you who still harp about the fact that it's illegal and should follow the laws should remember the fact that this country was founded by people who thought the laws that those in charge had created were unjust and did something about it. Many people who smoke pot today are hard working citizens who pay their taxes, love their family, and love their country, but it is an obligation of EVERY American to stand up if you think a law is unjust or immoral, even if you don't smoke pot at all. You owe it to the proud Americans before us to defend the rights of ALL Americans and not let big business over take the legal rights of all.
Why not legalize it,it's okay for the crack, meth, and pill heads and dealers to roam free and steal from the working people but pot is considered so bad. Someone is killed every few minutes over hard drugs or by a drunk driver never hear of a pothead killing anyone b/c of smoking.I would rather be around a pot smoker than a drunk or druggie and I don't do any drugs or smoke.I heard pot is the best pain killer around so instead of all these pills prescribe pot.
To Jerry Aldini: I suggest you research the marijuana crime rates in countries where marijuana is legal or decriminalized and you will see it is DRASTICALLY lowered and frees up the police power to go after synthetic drug abuse. Marijuana usage in these countries is also lowered, despite the fact that marijuana is legal in these countries.
