UPDATE @ 6pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Hundreds of people attended the funeral service for Donnie Adkins.
Out of respect to Donnie's family and friends, WSAZ did not have a camera inside Wednesday's service. WSAZ.com's Amanda Barren was inside the service, though, to listen as friends and family shared more about his life and legacy.
The gymnasium at Riverside High School was a sea of blue and white as dozens of first responders are paid their respects to the Glasgow Volunteer Firefighter.
Donnie died earlier this month when his boat capsized during a water rescue mission in Raleigh County. It took search crews almost a week to find him.
The Chaplain with the Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department spoke at the service about how Donnie knew there were lives in danger.
"He gave his life so another could live," Chaplain Dee Gibson said. "He didn't just save one life that day, he saved many."
Donnie's casket was draped with an American flag. His uniform sat next to it, along with dozens of flower arrangements.
State Fire Marshal Sterling Lewis addressed members of the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department during the service by saying, "...return to what you do best."
"I think that's what Donnie would want you to do," Lewis went on to say.
Lewis also thanked Donnie's family for allowing him to become a volunteer. "...without you sharing time he could not have done that," he said.
Donnie's father spoke during the service to thank first responders for their hard work and dedication. He also asked everyone in the crowd to never take life for granted.
"Everyone here that has children, or grandchildren, turn and give them a big hug because you never know from one minute to the next," Adkins said. "Do everything with your kids while you can. To be truthful, wish it could have been me, instead of him."
Donnie's father also told first responders he couldn't have made it without them.
Before Donnie's father spoke, his mother was taken from the service to CAMC Memorial for medical treatment.
Gov. Joe Manchin attended the funeral service and thanked Donnie's family, along with other emergency workers.
When the funeral service ended, local fire departments were dismissed slowly out of the gymnasium.
Donnie's casket was in a fire truck, escorted by several other fire trucks to the Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens along Route 60 in Glasgow.
Sources tell WSAZ.com the graveside service will end with a last call to Adkins over the radio.

UPDATE @ 1:30pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- According to a news release from the Kanawha County Commission, Firefighter Donnie Adkins of the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department was found in Piney Creek on Friday.
"It is with deep sadness that we accept the loss of Glasgow Firefighter Donald Adkins," Commission President Kent Carper said. "While Kanawha County mourns this loss, we respect Donald's bravery and sacrifice. I also wish to commend the hundreds of volunteers throughout the state, including the State Fire Marshal, Sterling Lewis, countless firefighters, EMS, law enforcement, the National Guard and the hundreds of other volunteers who risked their own personal safety in this selfless act of recovery of Donald Adkins."
Adkins was found about 4.5 miles from where his boat capsized during a water rescue on March 13.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Donald Adkins' family, friends and fellow firefighters during this time of mourning," Carper said.
Emergency crews tell WSAZ.com a crew was in the water, but it was actually a rescue team walking along the bank that actually found the body.
This was the second time search crews had been in this area searching for Adkins. The water levels have gone down in the area, making it much easier to search.
Search crews also say the body was found in a remote area that you can only access by 4-wheelers.
"I am very proud of the rescue teams that worked tirelessly to find a fallen brother," Commissioner Henry Shores said.
Adkins, 32, served on the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department for approximately three years.
14 crews were scheduled to come out this weekend to help in the recovery effort.
Gov. Joe Manchin today released the following statement after learning that first responders have located the body of Glasgow firefighter Donnie Adkins. Adkins died while rescuing Raleigh County citizens stranded by floodwaters on March 13:
“I want to commend the dedication of our first responders who always answer the call for help and who have been working day and night since severe flooding struck southern West Virginia last week.
“We lost one of those brave first responders when Donnie Adkins, from the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department, was swept away by floodwaters. He lost his life while working to help others. My thoughts and prayers are with Donnie’s family and friends at this difficult time, and I know all West Virginians are thinking of them.
“I want to thank the firefighters, rescue workers, emergency personnel and volunteers from across the state and other states who joined in the search for Donnie. They worked so hard to recover their lost friend and I know this is a difficult time for them, as well.
“West Virginians always extend their hands to help others. And I thank all of our first responders for extending theirs when we need it.”

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Heavy fog meant a later start for emergency crews Wednesday looking for a missing firefighter.

UPDATE: Tuesday, March 16 @ 3:40pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- For a fourth day, search crews are out trying to find the Glasgow Volunteer Firefighter who disappeared on Saturday in Raleigh County.
Donnie Adkins was involved in a boat accident during a flood rescue effort near Beckley.
Nearly 40 people, including swift water technicians, spent the day on the river Tuesday searching for Adkins.
Crews have also flown over the 13 mile river twice and once over the New River in hopes of finding any sign of Adkins.
Crews with chain saws are also at the scene clearing the debris, trash, logs and leaves along the river banks. They're focusing their attention on a large blockage in the river.
They are also tearing apart an old railroad trestle.
"We are going to get it, and we are going to bring a brother home," Fire Marshal Sterling Lewis said. "That is what they are thinking. It's that firefighter mentality and we just won't quit til we get home."
A crew recovered Adkins' wetsuit late Monday night. Earlier in the search, they found his life jacket and glove.
"He is here, we will continue," Lewis said.
There is also a six man team with a dog combing through the area. Twenty other walkers are also out helping in the recovery effort.
"The hydraulics of water is a powerful thing, you see in the tsunamis and wherever," Lewis said. "This creek, it would be no different than a tractor trailer hitting you at 60-70 mph, the pressure of that water. Water is horrible."
UPDATE @ 12:15pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The name of the Glasgow Volunteer Firefighter who disappeared while rescuing others in Raleigh County has been released.
At a news conference Monday, county officials told WSAZ.com Donald "Donnie" Adkins, 32, is the volunteer firefighter who went missing early Saturday morning.
Glasgow Volunteer Fire Chief Marty Blankenship said that Adkins was with the department for nearly three years and used to be a member of the Rand Volunteer Fire Department.
"He's just a good all around type of person," Blankenship said. "He'd be one of the first ones here and always wanted to help somebody."
Adkins leaves behind two children and was also considered a father to his girlfriend's little girl.
Emergency officials are now calling the search a recovery, not a rescue.
Right now, nearly 100 volunteers are searching along Beaver Creek, Piney Creek and the New River.
"You couldn't ask for anything better," Chief Blankenship said. "The efforts are really outstanding."
Kent Carper, Kanawha County Commissioner, says that the search efforts will continue until they can bring the body of the fallen firefighter home.
"The firefighters involved are trained they've had many practice training sessions before. It is just inherently dangerous," Carper said.
The Kanawha County Commission has asked Governor Joe Manchin to request all state flags be lowered to half staff in honor and memory of Firefighter Adkins.

UPDATE: Sunday @7:20pm
BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) -- Searchers have temporarily suspended the search for a firefighter missing since a boat accident during flood rescue efforts near Beckley.
Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Jimmy Gianato says darkness prompted searchers to stop for the night Sunday evening.
The Kanawha County firefighter was part of a crew sent to help with water rescues when their boat flipped Saturday. Rescuers combed the area on foot and by air Saturday and Sunday.
Separately, a Bradley woman died after being swept away in a flooded stream near her home Saturday.
Authorities say the combination of one to three inches of rain and melting snow resulted in heavy flooding in Raleigh, Greenbrier, Fayette and Mercer counties. Governor Joe Manchin has declared a state of emergency for 34 counties.
ORIGINAL STORY
RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A massive search effort is underway for a Kanawha County firefighter that went missing after a rescue boat capsized.
West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin says that firefighter is a Glasgow Volunteer Firefighter.
Firefighters from the Kanawha County were sent to the Beaver area of Raleigh County to assist with water Rescues Saturday morning.
Mike Fannin, Assistant Chief of Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department, says their swift water rescue crew had successfully completed about 12 evacuations when something went wrong.
"Apparently, something hit the boat and spun them around. They lost all the steering control and came down and crashed into the bridge. It nosed under the bridge and threw them out," says Fannin.
Two of the men on board were able to make it to shore, but one firefighter didn't.
Fannin says "we're hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst."
Additional fire crews, the National Guard and law enforcement are assisting with the search. A helicopter has also been brought in to help find the firefighter.
Four firefighters assisting with rescue efforts Saturday were taken to the hospital to be checked out.
