CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Criminals who flee or obstruct law enforcement in West Virginia can expect tougher penalties following the death of a Charleston police officer after a chase.
The Senate on Saturday unanimously approved a House-passed bill that punishes anyone who flees or attempts to flee an officer with a five- to 15-year prison term when a death results.
Charleston policeman Jerry Alan Jones was fatally shot by fellow officers in September while trying to capture suspect Brian Good.
Good began ramming police cruisers with his truck following a pursuit. He was killed when officers opened fire.
The new law would be named after the 27-year-old Jones. It also treats fleeing as a felony when it causes injury, or when the offender is under the influence.

To Charleston Resident, you are about an idiot, Wait wait hold the press, you're from Charleston.
My sympathies to the family of the fallen officer. But for the love of God, can we move on? Drug usage is rampant, no news day goes by without at least one story of a new meth lab discovery, child abuse prevails, the needs of the elderly are taking a back seat (as usual), and unemployment rages. The officer was killed by one of his own, and had they followed orders from their superiors during the chase, this violence we seem so obsessed with would never have occured. How many West Virginia military have been killed in the Middle East, but I don't see a bridge named after one of them, I don't see legislation to recognize their heroism. Enough, already!
This confuses me. Wouldn't the "new legislation" be better served to increase training for police officers so another situation like this doesn't arise? Crooks will always run, despite the penalties, because they are thinking of survival, not a law book. Officers can keep one another safer with more training in how to handle situations like this. In this case the officers' responses left much to be desired.
