CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Lawmakers want West Virginia to crack down on uninsured motorists by providing law enforcement with real time policy information during traffic stops and crash scenes.

Legislation passed Saturday envisions an electronic system that would also serve the courts and the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Sen. John Unger helped sponsor the bill. The Jefferson County Democrat said the measure could ease auto insurance rates in the state.

The House approved the Senate-passed bill 91-7 on Saturday, after amending it so it applied only to noncommercial vehicles. Commercial vehicle insurers could take part in the verification system voluntarily.

What is going to happen is. The state is going to force the insuarance company to buy into the technology to allow the the DMV and officers to due this. What does this mean for us. higher insurance rates.

How about the DMV start verifying the insurance. On the back of my renewal, I just had to fill out the little affidavit showing my company name, agent name, effective dates and policy number. Anyone can pull an agent/company name out of the phone book and make up a policy number.

Shame on those of you who try to group all people on assitance into a group of drug / alcohol abusers. Among them are also people like veterans who have been denied VA benefits and hard working people who have fallen on hard times or been injured on the job. Yes, we need to have reforms in benefit disbursement to make sure drugs are not traded for food stamps and that claims are valid. Insurance reforms are also necessary to make sure it is affordable to all classes of people.
