CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A bill that will force landlords to register their rental properties in Charleston is one step closer to becoming law.
On Monday evening, Charleston City Council's Finance Committee passed what is being called the landlord ordinance.
Landlords will have to register their properties with the city. They also would have to be inspected once every two years.
Public hearings are scheduled on the issue. Those dates will be released Tuesday.

Wonderful!! This needs to be done everywhere. Most people do not even realize, if they move for good cause, give notice, they ARE entitled to their deposit back. NORMAL wear and tear on floors, carpet, paint etc..is the OWNERS responsibilty. Wish I had known that law years ago living in Dunbar and SpringHill. I would have taken a couple of Landlords to Court.

property in disrepair is not always the fault of the land lord. many times the tenants are responsible for damage to rental properties and refuse to pay rent as well... typically a dead beat renter can get 5 or 6 months for free by the time all is said and done. and in the aftermath not leave anything but destruction in their paths.
