HUNTINGTON, W.Va (WSAZ) -- Marshall University Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick announced the Thundering Herd's 2010 football schedule on Tuesday.
Marshall's schedule features two primetime ESPN home games with West Virginia (Friday, Sept. 10) and UCF (Wednesday, Oct. 13) and includes contests with eight opponents that appeared in bowl games a year ago.
"This is an outstanding and challenging football schedule that gives our program a great deal of national exposure," Hamrick said. "Eight of our twelve opponents went to bowl games last season and the home schedule features a Friday night showcase for our entire state with the West Virginia game being on ESPN and a Wednesday night ESPN game with UCF."
The two ESPN home games are part of Conference USA's television package with ESPN.
Marshall will open the 2010 season by playing seven consecutive opponents that participated in bowl games last year.
The Thundering Herd and first-year head coach Doc Holliday will open the year at Big Ten power and defending Rose Bowl Champion Ohio State on Thursday, September 2nd and host the annual "Friends of Coal Bowl" with in-state rival West Virginia in the home opener at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 10 before a primetime national television audience on ESPN.
MU will travel to Bowling Green on Saturday, September 18, before returning home to host long-time Mid-American Conference rival Ohio University in the "Battle for the Bell" on Saturday, September 25. MU then travels to Southern Miss on Saturday, Oct. 2, before hosting rival UCF in an 8 p.m. Wednesday night ESPN game.
Marshall is scheduled to travel to East Carolina on Oct. 23, play host to UTEP on Oct. 30, travel to UAB on Nov. 6, host Memphis on Nov. 13, travel to SMU on November 20 and close out the regular season by hosting Tulane on November 27.
"This is a great football schedule with eight bowl teams from a year ago," Marshall head coach Doc Holliday said. "It is important that we do not let a day go by that we do not get better as a team in order to meet the challenges ahead of us.
"This schedule provides us with great exposure for our program. We have the opportunity to open at Ohio State and play two nationally televised ESPN games at home with West Virginia and UCF. ESPN moving the "Friends of Coal Bowl" to a primetime Friday slot will show case this Mountain State rivalry to the nation."
Additional game times and television coverage that includes selections from C-USA partners CBS College Sports and CSS will be announced at a later date.

Marshall is garbage right now but they have a great coach. WVU is way better right now but they have a garbage coach. As Mike would say "that's a situation". Let's go Mountaineers!
Oh boy, Coastal Carolina! Man that is a challenging start right there! I think they would have had a better opening game facing Morgantown High School! Can't wait til September 10, when Doc carves up his former team!
TO MIKE first off all its reading on hear but wvu all the way and thats just it its all easy to wvu thats way they are so good every year and we like it so we have the right to run the mouth looked like they had all there teeth to me wvu is good take the truth if you cant than stay home on game day and i dont even live in west vergina west vergina has a lot of fans all over the usa its 2010 get use to it dont cry aboult it but wvu gets to the confernce a lot
