CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ-TV) -- It might have looked like any other basketball game, but Wednesday's first-round state tournament game for the Sissonville Indians has been a long time coming.
The fact is the Sissonville students in attendance were not even alive the last time the school made it to the state tournament back in 1982.
"This is special," Sissonville student Justin Myers said. "It doesn't happen to Sissonville very often. We have to cherish it when it comes."
For the players families, this isn't just a game, but a community rally. The team's hard work sometimes causes folks from the area to get emotional.
"This has been quite an accomplishment for Sissonville," Lori Williams said. "It's a community event. These players are wonderful. We love you guys."
Making it to the state tournament for the first time in nearly three decades isn't the only reason the Indians will remember this season. They'll probably remember their mohawks. It's a unique look shared by players, managers and even the head coach.
"Hopefully for us it won't be another 28 years," Coach Rich Skeens said. "We've got a bunch of kids who are working hard. Hopefully you'll see Sissonville in the future."
In the end, the team's bid for a state title came up just short. The Indians lost to Weir 54-42. Despite the loss, players say they hope future Sissonville teams can build on this year's accomplishments.
"We've all been working together for four years," Chris Kelly said. "We knew we could make it here. We finally made it., and we just fell a little short. We're not going to hang our heads. We made it to the tournament, so it will set the ground work for more teams."
