WINFIELD, W.Va. (AP) - It's now up to a jury to decide whether a Putnam County hospital was negligent when it hired a doctor now facing numerous malpractice cases.
The dozens of people suing Doctor John King want the former Putnam General Hospital held responsible as well for allowing him to practice there in November 2002.
King left after six months. He now faces 122 lawsuits alleging he performed unnecessary surgeries, botched operations and committed other malpractice.
During closing arguments Tuesday, lawyers for the hospital told jurors that King met the requirements for temporary credentials.
They cited his medical licenses in a dozen states and glowing references from other doctors.
King has since changed his name to Christopher Martin. Charleston Area Medical Center bought the hospital from HCA last year and renamed it CAMC Teays Valley.
