Huntington Residents Vying for Google Fiber

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Internet speed one hundred time faster than what you have probably sounds pretty good.

In Huntington, it could become reality if Google chooses to test its new technology in the City.

In an effort to persuade Google that Huntington was the right choice, Bill Rawlinson with Strictly Business set up his laptop downtown Thursday afternoon and encouraged people to tape a quick recording telling folks at Google how much the want the Google Fiber Network.

"It would take more than just ten or twenty people contacting Google, we have to let them know we really want that service here or we'll be overlooked," Rawlinson said.

Rawlinson said if Google does choose Huntington, that would mean millions of dollars worth of high tech infrastructure in town, plus current Internet providers like Verizon or Comcast would have the option to use Fiber from Google for their customers.

It's a chance for Huntington to be on the cutting edge -- but only if the folks at Google see or read a lot of nominations.

I think it would be great to have google fiber in Huntington. Comcast needs some competition and Verzion is not available in all areas of Huntington.

Just a point of clarification the cities chosen don't have to have 50,000 people in them so even if our population is a little below that it won't hurt us. Here is the Google Moderation Answer that deals with it specifically: http://www.google.com/moderator/#15/e=4828&t=4828.41&q=4828.1efb0

If the all fiber Marshall University Network were expanded into the community we would not need Google to help us, but we could actually help ourselves. What is so experimental about fiber networks? The fiber technology has been around for 20 years.
