ATHENS, OHIO (WSAZ) --Athens Police say there was too much celebrating on Court Street Thursday night.

They say it all began around 9:40 p.m., moments after Ohio University upset Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Police Chief Ric Mayer says "rowdy persons poured out of the bars and began chanting and blocking the street."

According to a press release, only three city police officers were on duty so a call was put out for help including officers from Ohio University Police and the Athens County Sheriff’s Office.

The release says that after enough officers from the three departments arrived, teams of 4-5 officers were sent into the crowd to break it up.

Police say by 10:40 p.m. the crowd had dissipated and many had gone home while others returned to the bars. Extra officers stayed on duty to help ensure that the evening remained calm.

They say the only visible damage was a broken street light.
