CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A company is making plans to build a new plant in Ravenswood.
According to a news release, Armstrong World Industries will build a state-of-the-art mineral wool plant on the property adjacent to Century Aluminum Company. It closed last year and put hundreds of people out of work.
Armstrong World Industries will invest nearly $35 million in the state and create 40 to 45 new jobs.
Gov. Joe Manchin made the announcement on Friday.
Mineral wool is a key raw material used in the manufacture of Armstrong's acoustical ceiling tiles, according to the news release.
"This is tremendous, tremendous news for the Ravenswood area and for all of West Virginia," Manchin said. "I want to thank Armstrong for its continued investment in West Virginia and to let them know how pleased we are to build on their partnership with the Mountain State."
The governor says Armstrong chose the Millwood site because of competitive electricity rates and its central location to its manufacturing locations and suppliers.
The 30,000 square foot plant should be built and ready for business in mid-2012.
The hiring process will start about a year before the plant is scheduled to open.
Armstrong also operates a flooring plant in Beverly, W.Va. That location employees 700 people.
Armstrong World Industries Inc. is a global leader in the design and manufacture of floors, ceilings and cabinets, according to the release.
Statement from Senator Jay Rockefeller
"Every job is important in today’s economy and this news couldn’t be better,” said Rockefeller. “I have always said that West Virginia has the most dedicated and hard-working employees in the country – and now we’ll get to put more of our terrific men and women to work. I thank Armstrong for this new investment in our great state and I look forward to seeing them succeed."

Cant' believe these comments are encouraging people to get out of Jackson County. Yes kids go get education and come back to revive the county, not go somewhere else. What is wrong with having a plant "mentality", someone has to have it. Manufacturing built this great country of ours, it's shameful for it to be discouraged. Yes, the union situation needs to be improved to encourage the growth in Jackson county plant/industry, but to completely get rid of plants, now come on, that's a ridiculous idea. Look toward reviving Jackson County not leave it and fulfill that "Ghost Town" term. It's a wonderful place, full of possiblities, stop killing hopes, be optimistic!!!!

Back in the early 70s' I was employed at the lazy "K" or Kaiser and working in the casting department, I seen right there my future and I quit and went on to college and now I am retired (engineer at Hobet mining) and I have never been sorry about that great decision!
