CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia Public Service Commission has approved a rate increase for customers of Mountaineer Gas Company.
But because of a commission-ordered reduction in the company's costs for purchasing natural gas, residents should see their monthly bills actually go down an average of $44.
On Friday, the PSC approved a 4 percent increase effective March 29 followed on Nov. 1 by another .07 percent increase.
The company sought a 6.6 percent rate increase.
Mountaineer serves more than 220,000 customers across West Virginia.

During the MGC rate case, many opponents said: "How are we supposed to pay our bills? We live on a fixed income and our costs are rising." That could be Mountaineer Gas talking. MGC lives on a fixed income, by way of rates approved by the PSC. Its customer base is shrinking and gas sales are dropping. This is not a company making execs rich, but did just established a call center in Charleston, hiring locals instead of outsourcing to India. For every MGC customer, there is an underground gas line that needs to be maintained 24/7. MGC employees must show up, anytime, anyday to inspect any reported gas leak. They pay employees, pay for fuel, pay for equipment, etc. They incur rising costs like everyone else. They need to keep their aging gas lines in good shape. The company that bought MGC five years ago has not made a profit on its investment yet. We NEED this company to make a reasonable profit and be able to keep its facilities operating safely and reliably.
