UPDATE: Monday 3/22
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Huntington City Council voted Monday night to cut $900,000 from its budget during the next fiscal year.

The vote followed four weeks of special budget meetings. Here's a look at the big cuts:

  • $200,000 from the police department
  • $165,000 from personnel
  • $120,000 from the fire department

Then, there are the planned 20-day furloughs for public works and administration employees and 10 layoffs -- not to mention the impact the cuts themselves will make. There was considerable talk during the meeting about the Huntington-Cabell-Wayne Animal Control Shelter.

It is losing nearly $25,000, which translates into two employees, leaving only eight workers for the nearly 10,000 pets the shelter handles each year.

The budget will be sent to Charleston for final review. The cuts will take effect July 1.

ORIGINAL STORY
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's second-largest city is considering furloughs and layoffs to balance its city budget.

Huntington's city council has approved nearly $900,000 in budget cuts. Those include 20-day furloughs and approximately 10 layoffs.

Officials say the cuts also would trim nearly $200,000 from the police budget, $165,000 from personnel and $120,000 from the fire department.

Brandi Jacobs-Jones, director of administration and finance, says the fire and police cuts involve overtime and equipment expenses.

The council approved the cuts Saturday and is scheduled to address the budget Monday. The city has to submit a budget to the state by the end of March.

I dont see how the Fire Department could be cut anymore. Im currently looking up the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code for the Fireman to Civilian ratio. From what i understand HFD barley meets this. They have no choice in keeping this number of certified fireman on the department at all times.

How much money has the user fee brought in? Where has that money went? The cheif of police does not care about the people of huntington, because he lives in OHIO!, But he does have a small interest in Huntington, The old harts corner just off the bridge that cashes checks and sells "rolling papers" and beer and liquor, Wonder who's bussiness that is?

If the city is so bad off, why did all the ppl in administative at City Hall get big raises? Why did Wolfe create the liason position & hire his buddy Jim when he has a secretary who is suppose to take his calls. His secretary even got a raise. Furloughs are said to be across the board...the ppl who are salary will love that 20 day vacation. Wolfe took office, handed out huge raises includeing himself & now we have no money for servces. I wonder if the water bill from Harris Riverfront has been added to the budget since it is not running in the Ohio river anymore?
