Day 1, Saturday March 21
Aloha from the big island of Hawaii!
It was a long flight but anticipation over ruled what discomfort our group might have experienced. Certainly, the time change over 6 hours will be our biggest adjustment.
Follow John's Hawaii Trip!
Day 1 - Welcome to Hawaii
Day 2 - Kilauea Volcano
Day 3 - Akatsuka Orchid Gardens
Day 4 - Macadamia Nut Farm
Day 5 - Kona Coffee Farm
Day 6 - Welcome to Maui
Day 7 – Maui Day 2
We started off our Hawaiian tour with a solemn visit to the place where WWII was initiated, Pearl Harbor. Thousands died on that day, December 7th, 1941.
Our group started their tour of Pearl Harbor by visiting the site of the greatest loss of life in a single day by any ship in America, the USS Arizona. Actually, the Japanese woke up a sleeping giant that lead go one of our greatest victories as a nation.
R. G. "Bob" Kinzler was there. That Sunday Kinzler, with the US Navy stationed at the Schofield Barracks, watched from a hillside a mile away helplessly as Japanese plane after Japanese plane dropped their munitions into our Navy warships. It was an odd quiet feeling to listen to Bob -- one of the few military personnel left -- who watched the whole battle play.
"I could only watch. Only had my .45 service hand gun, but I couldn't get it to fire," Kinzler told our group. "It was quiet on the Arizona Memorial, surprisingly quiet."
Visitors, including some of our own tour group, threw flowers on the water as a memorial and a reminder that we haven't forgotten their sacrifices.
The rest of the day was spent on a bus tour of the island -- there are some breathtaking views in Hawaii.
Tomorrow is a day to relax. Many will take in sights of the island. I'll probably find a soft spot on the sand of Waikiki Beach.
Keep your green thumb growing!
-John Marra

For those who are saying that a vacation to HI is too expensive, how much research have you done?? I don't fly very often but get miles by belonging to other programs. I've flown to HI 6 times using those miles. I stay in out of the way places and not on Waikiki Beach to save money. I use the Entertainment Coupon Book for HI for BOGO meals and other discounts. It really can be an affordable vacation if you do the research and don't just sit back and complain about other people getting to go.
John - I love the pictures and stories you are sending back to us. Keep up the good work and have a safe trip home.
I do have one more comment to make. Why do all of you people pick apart everything anyone tries to do? It's almost as you get your kicks trying to prove other people wrong. Who cares if Mr. Marra got the place wrong! And there are jobs out there and I agree with another that the people that don't have a job and are on here surfing the net just don't want to give up their unemployment or food stamps, whichever it may be. Get off your bums and go look for a job, and if you don't want to get a job quit your complaining about someone else taking a vacation. Our children will be able to take vacations as long as they get off there duffs and go to college and get a degree and get a real job, and not just a government job. This country is making a comeback with the younger gerneration that wants to make something out of theirself, not just a rotting couch potatoe!
