CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Gov. Joe Manchin has vetoed a bill to add more than 120 State Police troopers by 2016.
In his veto order Wednesday, Manchin said increasing the numbers to 800 in five years might require lowering the acceptance standards for troopers. The governor says that doesn't promote public safety.
Manchin spokesman Matt Turner says the governor also was concerned about placing a time frame on adding troopers.
John W. Smith Jr., the president of the West Virginia Troopers Association, says additional troopers are needed because 36 of the state's 60 detachments are down to five or fewer members. He also says about four dozen troopers will become eligible to retire in the next 18 months.
Turner says the governor did add six more troopers to the state's Crimes Against Children Unit.

I talked with the GOV about the manpower issue until I was blue in the face and all He said was maybe next year. To you Troopers thanx for all you do with little manpower and no backing from your GOV. He makes sure he has more than enough Troopers on GOVs Security and that they get quick promotions. I wonder if the public knows they get promoted without testing????????????????
i don't know how he keeps getting voted in,i think it's his name, but i agree with anonon 03.24.10//our sheriff's dept won't do any think i called manchin's office about mr miller and they won't do anything ,i think that we the boone county people need to take the law in our own hands, manchin gave boone county more money for 2 more on the sheriff's dept, and they are just like chad and rest of the crew
i didn't think thank wsaz would post any comments about the boone county sheriff's dept on the 6:00 news, they tell us to send coments but won't air them live when we tell the truth about our local sheriff;s dept
