MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Despite its reputation for historically having some of the most numbing poverty in the nation, Martin County is shaking off those negative images.
A group of dedicated people is helping by ensuring that the county's senior citizens have enough to eat.
Donald Setser is the head of senior programs in Martin County. He's too young to remember the declaration of the war on poverty by President Lyndon Johnson in Martin County, but says people are hungry everywhere.
"You've got to be over 60 years old and considered low income by federal and state guidelines," he said. "When we first started, we had 96 slots available, but we've expanded to 120."
New federal dollars allow that expansion. A monthly food delivery is a supplement for seniors.
The program was able to expand in Martin County because of federal dollars. It will continue monthly through the end of the year.

You are happy with your judge? It is acceptable for 95 percent of your citizens to have running water? It is NOT acceptable for the children in our state to NOT have running water. The "President" didn't "mark" your people...and it certainly isn't President Obama's place to un-mark them. I guess its easy for politicians to blame Washington.
I totally agree with Judge Callaham. The citizens of Martin County are no worse off than those living else where. There is a need for assitance to help the needy and low income senior citizens of Martin County just like every other county and state in the nation. Many times senior citizens are forgotton about.
another failure of big gov.the war is lost and its time the co,s quite selling their souls for freebees.every productive hard working person in this country are sick of this groveling to politicans.decent moral people took care of their families and neighbors for thousands of years.they believed in thetruth that if a person wont work they shouldnt eat.now there is no shame.dont give me that old tired line we,ve been lucky,we must never had hardtimes like these people have!not so!but if a person wont take care of their family and themselves, what makes you thinkother peoples hard earned money should be stolen to take care of people who wont.not gov.money, taxpayer money.
