ORIGINAL STORY
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Marshall basketball coach Donnie Jones has notified Athletic Director Mike Hamrick he has accepted the same position with the University of Central Florida.
UCF will reportedly introduce Jones as the school's new basketball coach at a Tuesday press conference.
Jones led the Thundering Herd to a 24-10 record in the 2009-2010 season, including an 11-5 record against Conference USA. Marshall lost to Appalachian State in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. It was Marshall's first post-season appearance since the 1988 season.
Jones replaced Ron Jirsa in 2007 as Marshall's head coach. In his first season in Huntington Jones led Marshall to a 16-14 record. In his second season the Thundering Herd finished 15-17.
Central Florida fired long time coach Kirk Speraw earlier this month after 17 seasons with the program.
Jones returns to Florida with a reputation as a coach familiar with the state's recruiting grounds. Jones served as an assistant at the University of Florida under Billy Donavan. During his time as an assistant the Gators won back-to-back national titles in 2006 and 2007.

"Coach Jones was telling me about UCF and explaining to me about the facilities," Davis said. "He had a hard time recruiting in Huntington, W.V. That's not a place people want to go. He told me when he goes to Orlando we can recruit top notch players. Orlando is a great city and people want to be there. With UCF's facilities and the team we have now we can be something special. I looked at his interview and he said something like the sleeping giant, waking it up. I have confidence in Coach Jones and his staff that we can wake the giant."
Without a doubt Mark Cline is the most qualified candidate. Division 1 assistant coach for over 15 years. He has worked with some of the best Division 1 and pro coaches out there. In addition to being an excellent coach, his skills as a recruiter are superior! Coach Cline KNOWS basketball!! Marshall needs an experienced Division 1 coach and one that is from our wonderful state. Coach Cline would come to Marshall not intent on "working his way up the ladder", but on the intent to put Marshall on the NCAA map!
