UPDATE 7/14/10
ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- New driving laws take effect in Kentucky Thursday, and police say breaking them could cost - or kill.
Beginning Thursday, June 14, text messaging while driving is illegal. For teenagers 18-years-old and younger, talking on cell phones behind the wheel is prohibited also.
Lindsey Tolliver learned her texting lesson the hard way.
"I used to a lot, but I've had a couple wrecks," Tolliver said. "I picked up my phone, ran off the road and jerked the wheel back up. I wasn't paying attention."
Jack Roberts has never even sent a text message, but he says he knows it's bad car karma.
"I think it's pretty dangerous, might get someone hurt or killed," Roberts said.
According to Gov. Steve Beshear, Kentucky had more than 57 thousand crashes last year and more than 200 deaths, all because of driver distraction.
"Distracted driving is a major issue," Maj. David Slone with the Ashland Police Department said. "Cell phones are something we can control. Our legislators have enacted a law to help us combat the problem."
Until January 1, 2011, officers will be issuing warnings, but after the new year drivers can expect tickets and fines.
UPDATE 4/15/09
FRANKFORT, Ky (WSAZ) -- Gov. Steve Beshear signed a bill into law today making it illegal to text while driving in the state of Kentucky.
The bill also bans all use of cell phones behind the wheel for drivers under the age of 18.
The ban will go into effect in July, but drivers will only receive a warning from police through the end of the year -- after that, it's a $25 dollar fine for the first offense and $50 after that.
Kentucky is the 22nd state to ban texting while driving statewide.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The General Assembly has given final
approval of a bill aimed at banning people from sending text messages while driving.
The measure cleared its final hurdle on Thursday when the House
voted 86-10 to pass it.
The sponsor, Democratic state Sen. Denise Harper Angel of Louisville, said the bill prohibits motorists from writing, sending or reading text messages while driving. It carries fines of $25 to $50, plus court costs.
Gov. Steve Beshear said he plans to sign the bill into law.

texting while driving is pretty stupid. why not put a hot plate in your car and prepare a nice family meal on your way home from work to save a few minutes. why not just straight take a nap while driving. how stupid are people, honestly? if you die while texting and driving at the same time, then you probably deserve it, natural selection at its finest. but maybe the minivan with a mother and her three children don't deserve to die as you slam into them at a high rate of speed while texting and watching the tv in your dash.
I belive it said at the top. 18-and younger!!!!!!!! So if you are over 18 then shut up...
to Dan on Jul 15, 2010 at 06:03 PM, If you were pulled over then I'm sure they had good reason. If you swerve or anything such as that, then they have the right to pull you over. Why are you so worried about it?! Sounds to me like you have something to hide. Get over it. KSP just does their job, and if it involves pulling you or me over then so be it. I don't have a problem being pulled over. That shows me that they are protecting the state, and also if a police officer is texting I'm sure that its something important. Get over yourself people. Kudos to KSP.
