SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Prom is a night most girls start dreaming about when they are little.
To make sure those dreams aren't shattered, St. Mary's Medical Center Trauma Services held a "shattered dreams" program Thursday afternoon at South Point High School.
The program included a mock crash where the driver was arrested for DUI and the two of the passengers died.
Organizers say they hope this program will show how serious drinking and driving really is.
"When you see it, it really puts into perspective what it's really like not just saying saying don't drink and drive you actually see the consequences," student Drew Brock said.
Students also heard from a woman who lost her son in an alcohol related accident.

This is a very brief description of the program Corella. There is also a PowerPoint presentation that the Trauma physicians present that shows various accident scenes and discusses all of those topics as they apply to each accident scene. Alcohol is a realistic reason kids die in wrecks. More than most of you realize. However, the program does also cover speeding, drug use, cell phone usage, and distractions such as arguing while driving.
Sometimes these work, sometimes they don't. Minford High School holds one of these every 4 years, they have the hearst, the helicopter, the cops the ambulance, fire dept. etc. But I remember in 9th grade when the had one, literally over the next few years 5 or more people died in car wrecks that were completely the opposite of what was shown in the mock crash. So if schools would start looking at more realistic reasons kids die in car accidents..i.e. Speeding, racing, talking on the cellphone/texting, etc...then maybe we might be able to show these kids something. Showing alcohol as the cause in these mock accidents every time is not going to do anything for every other reason you can die in a car wreck...
These things work! I remember as i went to HS in wayne, they did this AT the highschool... firetrucks/fakeblood/healthnet... and i remembered that the night of prom...
