CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A $417,444 cut in state funding has West Virginia librarians wondering how they will maintain services next year.

State lawmakers included the money in next year's budget, but Gov. Joe Manchin vetoed the increase.

Manchin spokesman Matt Turner says the governor is not trying to kill library services in the state. Rather, he cut funding to those programs he thought could still operate with less state money.

State Library Commission Secretary J.D. Waggoner says the state's 97 public libraries will suffer because of the cut, but they must endure just like other government agencies.

To compensate for the cuts, some librarians say they will reduce operating hours, leave vacancies unfilled and scale back on purchasing books and other materials.

A write up in a local weekly newspaper said some library systems, including Wayne County, will be taking deeper cuts than those mentioned by the state. Seems that new state rules mandate that the amount of state funds must equal the amount of local funds. Wayne County just doesn't have the kind of local tax money. Unless Wayne County's libraries can get some more money, they will probably have to really make some deep cuts in services.

Libraries are way too important to cut their funding, if anything funding should be increased. Everyone needs to write, email or call the governors office and let them know that this is unacceptable to the citizens of WV.

Here throughout Pittsburgh there is an extensive library system named after former steel mogel Andrew Carnegie. Why doesn't big business take a step up to the plate in the state of West Virginia?
