Kanawha County Building Dedication Canceled Due to Mine Disaster
The disaster at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County is rippling across the state Tuesday night. The dedication ceremony for the new Kanawha County Sheriff's Department and Prosecuting Attorney's Office has been canceled in Kanawha County.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The disaster at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County is rippling across the state Tuesday night.
The building dedication ceremony for the new Kanawha County Sheriff's Department and Prosecuting Attorney's Office has been canceled in Kanawha County.
County Commission President Kent Carper says the ceremony was canceled out of respect for the families that lost loved one at the mine.
"We are reminded as a coal-producing county that -- while our miners keep the lights on for us -- they do so while exposing themselves in a dangerous environment," he says.
