RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- For an entire week, it was all eyes on West Virginia.
It's attention that the state has become used to, but would never request.
And even today -- days after the Big Branch Mine disaster -- we're still hearing stories of heroism, hope and just how tight mining communities around our region really are.
Our latest WSAZ.com Hometown Hero is awarded to no one in particular, but to an entire region of heroes who continue to help victims' families and friends recover from a horrible tragedy.
The award goes to many people -- people including the numerous mine rescue workers who rushed into the Big Branch Mine when everyone else was rushing out.
Several mine rescue teams from our region -- and even across the country -- pitched in to help out as soon as word broke of the mine disaster. They risked their own lives in a place where man was never meant to go.
While the disaster ripped at hearts across the nation, it brought out the best of folks here in our region.
If you'd like to help the families with the recovery, there are several ways you can help. Many banks have established donation funds.
And the West Virginia Council of Churches has started a disaster fund. If you'd like to make a donation, you can contact the council at 304-344-3141. We've also provided a direct link to its Web site through our Featured Links here at WSAZ.com.
