A New Place to Vote Early

JACKSON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Going to the polls and waiting in long lines to vote can be frustrating, but two West Virginia counties are trying to ease some of that tension by providing voters with more options.
Early voting began on Wednesday in West Virginia and so far, dozens of people have already filed in to make their political picks. Some folks are also picking where they vote.
Jackson and Monroe Counties set up satellite precincts hoping to make things run more smoothly on election day.
"Perhaps this will continue the popularity of early voting and I would like to see voter turnout improve as well," Secretary of State Natalie Tennant said.
"It's a convenience thing for the voters," Jackson County Clerk Jeff Waybright said. "I also think it will help us as far as problems on Election Day."
This new voting option recently passed the state Legislature allowing folks in Jackson County to cast their early ballots in both Ripley and Ravenswood.
"I'm all for it," Jackson resident Louise Rhodes said. "I just think it gives everyone the opportunity to vote and be able to vote when you want."
"It should make it very convenient for people to get out, cast their ballots, pick the candidate of their choice and I would just encourage all people and all citizens to get involved in this process of the election," Republican Delegate Mitch Carmichael said.
Still, some fear their ballot could get lost or go uncounted.
"We don't have to take out a bunch of paper ballots," Waybright said. "If we had a paper ballot system it would almost be impossible for us to do this."
Jackson County now uses new touch screen voting machines.
"Everything is processed the same, everything is maintained the same, everything is secured the same," Waybright said.
All voting has gone completely paperless at satellite precincts, which has helped streamline the voting process.
"You get a couple on board then you get a couple more on board and then it becomes a norm," Tennant said. "Budgets for satellite precincts then become just a regular part of an election-year budget."
An electronic poll book is used for registered voters to log in and once a person votes, he or she cannot go to another precinct as the system will lock that person out.
