ORIGINAL STORY 4/23/10
LOGAN, W.Va. (AP) -- Logan County is getting more than $8.7 million to expand its sewer system.
Democratic Congressman Nick Rahall announced the federal grant for the county public service district Friday.
Rahall says the funds will help cover the cost of extending sewer service to 263 homes. Currently the system has more than 1,300 homes.
The $11.7 million project includes installing more than 36,000 feet of pipe and a pumping station, among other things. It's designed to serve homes that currently dump raw sewage into streams or rely on poorly functioning septic systems.
In related news, CSX is preparing to launch a multimillion-dollar project to replace railroad crossings throughout Logan.
Mayor Serafino Noletti says more than 5,000 railroad ties will be placed from Logan to Stollings. New signals also are planned.
Some work already has been done. Noletti says the project's official start will be Monday.
David Farley with CSX says the project will be done in three phases. The first phase is replacing the crossings, followed by installing signals and removing poles.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of summer or early fall.
