RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (AP) -- A sewer consultant says weather is the culprit for an overwhelming stench in Ravenswood that's drawn complaints from residents.

Mark Mercer says a rapid rise in temperatures earlier this month caused solid materials in the city's sewage lagoon system to rise to the top.

Once the materials are exposed to air, they undergo a process called denitrification and gas bubbles explode in the air.

Mayor Lucy Harbert says she suggested putting something in the lagoon system to make it smell better. But she was told that would put the system out of compliance with environmental regulations.

Mercer says the best thing to do is wait until the stench goes away.

A public meeting on the stench is scheduled for Thursday.

I think everyone's on the right track here.... Excuses are all we always get & the "leadership" that we have is indeed "tricky" and untrustworthy. Its sad that people keep re-electing the same individuals - its time for CHANGE and GROWTH!

Nothing says "Welcome to Ravenswood" like the smell of raw sewage. Maybe you should put it in the travel brochure. Come to Ravenswood, enjoy the sites and smells of Poo Island.
