ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia's Senate Minority Leader has died after years of battling with brain cancer.
59-year-old Don Caruth passed away Saturday morning. He was a Republican from Mercer County.
He was diagnosed in November 2008 with Glioblastoma Multiforme, a form a brain cancer. He had surgery and improved, but then relapsed earlier this year, missing much of the legislative session.
Caruth was born in Princeton in 1950. He graduated from Athens High School, attended Concord College and then received a law degree from WVU.
He was first election to the House of Delegates in 2002, serving two terms representing Mercer County. Caruth then ran successfully for the state senate in 2004, quickly rising to the position of minority leader.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced yet.
House Speaker Rick Thompson released this statement about Don Caruth:
“My heart goes out to the loved ones of Senator Caruth, who was a man of great integrity, intellect and dignity. I mourn their loss, as well as the Legislature's loss. I very much enjoyed working with and getting to know Senator Caruth. He was a strong leader and an exemplary legislator -- he represented his party, the Senate and his district very well. I know I speak for every member of the House in saying he will be greatly missed.”
House Minority Leader Tim Armstead released this statement:
"We will deeply miss Don, not only for the insight he brought to so many important issues, but also for his friendship, kindness, integrity and humility. Never were those qualities more apparent than in the recent months when he faced devastating illness with tremendous courage. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Laura, his children, and all his family during this difficult time."
Governor Joe Manchin released this statement Saturday:
“Don Caruth brought so much to the West Virginia State Senate. He was a man of strong conviction and he was truly committed to the people in his district and to our entire state. No matter if you were a Republican or a Democrat, Don was a unique public servant who would always work across the aisle.”
Representative Shelley Moore Capito released this statement Sunday morning:
“Don Caruth was a true statesman and was respected by all for his strength and kindness. His dedication to West Virginia and to Mercer County was apparent from the moment he began serving the state in 2002. Don will be sorely missed—not only by his friends, family and colleagues at the Capitol—but also by the people of West Virginia, who knew the great value of his service and who held him in such high regard. Don’s wife, Laura, and his entire family will be in our thoughts and prayers as we go about honoring and remembering this great West Virginian.”

Is this the same type of brain cancer that ted kennedy battled?
My thoughts and prayers are with the Caruth family and his co-workers at his law firm. Whether he was a democrat or republican, it doesn't matter. He is a child of God and that is what is most important. Personally, I valued his concervative views.
My condolences to the Senators family and friends. Even tho' he was a republican and I a democrat and we didn't agree on most anything, he was ALWAYS a gentle and charming man who only wanted the best for the people he represented. He will truly be missed. RIP Don!
