BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- When vandals knocked over nearly 80 gravestones at a rural Kentucky cemetery, the community was outraged.
Saturday, inmates, union members and community volunteers turned out in droves to help get the old Kavanaugh Methodist Cemetery back in order.
Volunteers brought in their own equipment and supplies to fix the broken tombstones and setting them back upright.
The graves were vandalized about two weeks ago. Many of them were centuries old.
Many members of Brenda Huffman's extended family are buried there.
"It just breaks my heart, and I just can't imagine why anybody would be so cruel as to do something like this. It's just been remarkable, the people in the neighborhood who have come together to help fix the church," Huffman said.
No one has been arrested in connection with the vandalism.

I was at kavanaugh church on May 1, 2010 as one of the inmates helping with the vandelism. That was the most inmature and most disrespectful thing i have ever witnessed! My heart goes out to the family's of the loved ones and the WONDERFUL people at Kavanaugh Methodist, I loved to help, there was no better feeling in the world and i hope justice is done to the Lost people that done this!
I would like to thank the inmates for helping with the clean up of the grave yard. My heart goes out to the families that were affected. I know how they feel it happened to my parents tombstone.
I had this happened to my parents tombstone in Point Pleasant. I believe these vandals should be made to meet the victims family, put flowers on the graves for each holiday, plus mow the whole cemetery for yrs. to come, plus pay to have the tombstone reset. Some day these vandals will answer to someone higher up than me. I really don't know how they lay their heads down at night...I also want to commend the inmates that volunteered to help cleaning up, bet they would like to have a few minutes alone with the vandals.....
