UPDATE 5/5/10 @ 11:00 p.m.
CAMPBELLS CREEK, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The innocent driver hit during a high speed chase is speaking out, and even though he's battered and bruised he says he's not angry at the man who hit him.

Tom Burnside is still in a lot of pain with injuries up and down his left side where he was hit.

"My body feels like somebody beat me with a baseball bat," Burnside says. "My shoulder, my elbow, my wrist, my hip and my leg but mostly it's my head. I have excruciating pain in my head."

The injuries were caused by a crash that happened Tuesday on MacCorkle Avenue. Police say Joe DeLafuentes was driving eratically through busy parts of Charleston and when they tried to stop him, he took off.

DeLafuentes ran a red light on MacCorkle Avenue in Kanawha City and that's when he slammed into the truck Burnside was driving.

"He just came out of nowhere," Burnside said.

Burnside had borrowed his brother-in-laws truck to pick up some garden supplies at Lowe's. The truck suffered severe damage and Burnside says he's lucky to be alive, but he is not angry at DeLafuentes.

"I know it sounds crazy but im glad that he hit me," Burnside says. "I can handle this, having him kill somebody's child would have been so much harder to handle."

That could have been a reality because police say DeLafuetnes was driving without any regard for anyone else on the road.

Police found drugs in DeLafuentes' car and he had just been released on bond because of drug chages. But Tom, who is an Evangalist on Christian radio, isn't condemning DeLafuentes, he's preaching forgiveness and hopes this is a lesson to others about the dangers of drugs.

"Once you enter into a world of drugs, it turns into a monster in your closet that never goes away," Burnside says. "And really I feel sorry for him and I want him and his family to know I don't have any animosity toward them at all and I hope he gets the help that he needs."

In Burnside's time of need he says the support of nearby churches and friends has been overwhelming, and he's leaning on his family and faith to get through.

"I serve an awesome God and there's no doubt in my mind its through his grace and mercy that I made it through this, and through his grace and mercy I will recover."

Burnside also says he's thankful to the woman who rushed in to try and help him after the accident, the EMS workers and police.

He says he's not upset that police were chasing DeLafuentes because he says had they not tried to stop him, he could have hit someone else.

UPDATE 5/4/10 @ 11:00 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The man who led police on a high speed chase through Charleston Tuesday was out on bond after being arrested for drugs on Sunday.

Police say Joe DeLafuentes refused to pull over on I-64 and sped away from them. He eventually crashed on MacCorkle Avenue after running a red light. DeLafuentes hit Evangelist Tom Burnside's truck when Burnside was trying to turn onto MacCorkle avenue and did significant damage.

The chase started after police received several calls that DeLafuentes was driving erratically.

WV State Police say they arrested DeLafuentes on Sunday for possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver.

Trooper L.W. Price says they executed a search warrant at DeLafuentes' headshop "Backroom Novelties" in St. Albans on Sunday. Trooper Price says in the shop they found two pounds of marijuana, money, plastic baggies and scales. He says DeLafuentes admitted to selling marijuana out of his store.

DeLafuentes posted bond on Monday.

Now, he's in even more trouble. So far, he's been charged with several traffic violations but drug charges may also be filed.

Police found a small amount of marijuana and some prescription pills in DeLafuentes' SUV. Police are also conducting toxicology tests to see if he was on drugs when he ran from police.

Burnside's daughter, Nicole tells WSAZ.com her father is home recovering Wednesday. We're told he suffered some head injuries during the crash.

Nicole says her family wants to thank everyone for their prays and support during this time.

The family also wants DeLafuentes and his family to know they are praying for him as well.

In a statement released to WSAZ.com, the family says they are praying DeLafuentes gets the help he needs and is able to overcome this situation.

"We are thankful that God intervened and no one was killed yesterday (Tuesday)", Burnside's daughter, Nicole said. "It could have been much worse."

UPDATE 5/04/10 @ 7:30 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Authorities tell WSAZ.com that MacCorkle Avenue has since reopened.

ORIGINAL STORY 5/04/10
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A police chase has ended in a crash in Charleston.

911 dispatchers tell WSAZ.com the crash happened just after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday in the 5700 block of MacCorkle Avenue.

Charleston Police say the chase started just before the Greenbrier Street exit along Interstate 64. The chase started when the driver of the blazer was driving dangerously and swaying in and out of traffic, according to police.

Police say the driver was driving too erratically to keep up but they were trying to keep him in their sights.

Eventually, the driver got off the MacCorkle Avenue exit in Kanawha City. When he reached the intersection of the Lowe's Shopping Plaza, he ran a red light and hit a truck.

The bed of the truck was knocked off, the wheel also fell off.

Both the suspect and the driver of the truck were taken to the hospital. Their injuries do not appear life threatening. The suspect was pepper sprayed by police.

The suspect has been charged with multiple traffic violations, but more charges are expected to be filed in the case. Police tell WSAZ.com they believe drugs were involved.

911 dispatchers say the northbound and southbound lanes of MacCorkle Avenue are shut down at this time. The road is expected to remain closed until at least 5:30pm.

Krause, I see you're not a big advocate of police chasing law breakers. Are you serious? Do you really think taking down a plate # is the end-all? Are you really willing to bet that that person driving erradically won't hit a whole family and they all burn to death in the crash? C'mon!! My wife and kids are on tehe road too. I'm not willing to risk it. Possibly under the influence too? Who knows when you spot someone like this. Maybe you should check out the news from a few years ago. (Re: Rusty Bellomy) Young man on pills/alcahol went left of center and hit Bellomy and his grandson as they rode Bellomys motorcycle. Killed Bellomy and the boy is still recovering. No! Not willing to chance it! Not at all! I'm a christian and I'm glad that Burnside has a forgiving heart. (Also glad that the state is a little more hard-nosed, and that the driver will be tried) Life getting tough? I hate that for you, but don't be out endangering the rest of us. Everybody's life gets tough.

By both pure luck and perhaps blessing; this person managed to get away from a truly serious injury. Is a high speed police chase really woth that type of risk? How much longer before an innocent person is permenantly disabled or even killed?
