Smokers in Putnam County can now light up. That's after the Putnam County Board of Health voted to allow smoking in public places.
The board voted three-to-two not to renew the smoking ban ordinance.
Back in January, the board voted to ban smoking, but due to a technicality, it was illegal.
Now, public places can allow smoking unless the business owners place a sign on the door stating no smoking allowed.
As far as sign posting, there was no language in the ordinance that states who's responsible for purchasing the smoking or non-smoking signs.

To Dur: Really, lawnmowers affect your health? I don't see hard hitting news stories about second hand mower fumes killing people. Of course carbon dioxide affects you and everyone, but I don't sit next to you in a restaurant with a lawn mower idling while you eat do I. Businesses should not have the right to chose to allow smoking, they are out to make money, they don't have to worry about the greater good, that is the job of government. And no businesses won't go bankrupt because people will still go out to dinner that don't smoke and have to put up with the inconsiderate... And eating, eating affects the person that does the eating, the fat doesn't filter out into the air and clog my arteries. The reason people have problems with smoking is because it affects other people than the one with the habit. Eating, you can eat yourself to death and it doesn't affect me. And you should pay higher costs for insurance because you are going to rack up huge medical bills in your lifetime.

I wouldn't mind restaurants having smoking sections if they were capable of laying them out better. Many have nothing separating one from the other except a few feet and a barrier that doesn't reach the ceiling, so even when you're sitting in non you're really not. I agree it makes sense that restaurants should have control over how they are run. But they are held to certain health codes and I've always wondered why smoking wasn't included in this. However, I can see the unfairness in the ban. Perhaps it would be better to work for a type of compromise, better separation of areas would be nice. True, avoiding places that allow smoking isn't rocket science, but why should we have to? I don't understand why both sides can't go to the same place and be satisfied. And Winston, I don't think smokers are bad people, I just don't want to smoke with you.
