CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Average weekly wages in all 55 West Virginia counties lag behind the national average.
Federal figures released Monday show Boone County leads the state with an average weekly wage of $824.
Wirt County's average weekly wage of $388 is the lowest. The national average weekly wage is $840 and the state average is $673.
The figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics are based on data reported by state work force agencies for the third quarter of 2009, the latest available.
According to the bureau, weekly wages in 23 counties averaged $501 to $600. Average weekly wages in 14 counties ranged from $601 to $700, while wages in nine counties were lower than $500.

Jake, don't look now but I believe you're making my arguement. It sounds like you had to get an education, a degree or 2 of them just to get a leg up. I'm sure you'll get a lot of practice weilding those windmills together in WV. LOL!
Attn Really now just to let you know i do have a college degree. But guess what no good payin jobs in this area so i choose to join a union apprenticeship where i earned a degree in industial maintence. And belive it or not we are in an industial age with everything going green . There is not enough welders in the country to man all the work goin on. So a good trade skill is the way to go now adays . If you are not a doctor or lawyer the cost of college is not worth it.
Hey Jake, if you really want a competitive wage you need to educate. Hello McFly, we live in the information age not the industrial age; brains not bronze is the path forward. WV Bill has it right, the gov't & the unions have ‘dumbed’ down this State to where everyone thinks they are owed something. All you’ve done is priced yourself out of a global marketplace. Face it, those jobs aren’t coming back! You can blame the Repubs or the Democraps all you want but those good ole days are long gone. This entitlement mentality the people of this State seem to embrace unconditionly is not the answer. If you want to be a winner, you have to be smart and make smart choices and getting a good education is one of those key choices!
