CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia voters appear more interested in the upcoming primary than they were during the last midterm election year.

Around 40,000 voters cast early ballots in advance of Tuesday's election.

Early in-person voting began April 21 and ended Saturday. Secretary of State Natalie Tennant released final figures from 53 of West Virginia's 55 counties on Monday.

The early voting turnout was about 14,000 higher than in the previous off-year primary, in 2006. But it's well below that of 2008. During that primary, the state's political parties were picking nominees for president, governor and various statewide offices.

Both major parties are holding open primaries and accept ballots from independent and unaffiliated voters.

I think nationally there should be a tax break incentative to all voters. This would increase voter turn out. We all need to vote and be rewarded for doing so.
