HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's a different kind of bank robbery --
One where bank and credit union members may willingly give robbers access to their money.
Credit unions in the Huntington area are cautioning their members about a phone scam which seeks to get their debit card account information through fraudulent means.
According to a press release from the West Virginia Credit League Union, credit union members have been receiving calls from scammers over the weekend. The group says a similar scam was reported in the Charleston area last week.
In Huntington, the Huntington's Federal Credit Union has received dozens of calls, and at least three cases of actual cases of fraud because of this problem.
Angie Shumway is the the branch manager. She says if you fall victim to this type of scam, you may be out of luck.
"You're not guaranteed to get your money back, especially once you've given out your account number and your PIN number, you're not guaranteed to get your money back," Shumway said.
"While phone scams of this type are not new, the number of credit union members receiving calls seems to be more intense," said Rich Schaffer, senior vice president of the West Virginia Credit Union League in Parkersburg.
"We urge credit union members never to give their card information out over the phone to callers seeking it -- even those posing as your financial institution," Schaffer emphasized. "That should be a major red flag since the credit union would already have that information on file."
Credit union members who think they are a victim of the scam should contact their credit union immediately.

I received a text on monday at 9:44pm address read from customer service@cityofhuntington.com call huntingtonized customer care department at 866-200-1514 and me knowing that i have no accounts there i did call the number and it said my debit card had been frozen enter my account number and pin to unfreeze the account i then hung up becareful people i knew it was a scam but some will fall for this
My wife received the same text message at 9:45pm. Of course we did not even call them back. If this ever happens, you can search on google.com for the phone number to see just who is calling. The website it said to goto also did not show up. I hope our government can nab these trouble makers and soon. Please be cautious and never give out any info EVER to anyone on the phone.
What's funny is that they sent me a text stating "your card beginning in 4414 has been deactivated please call this number to correct the issue." Ii guess it's possible for someone to fall for it but I don't have and never had a card that began with those #'s. At least if their gonna try to scam they could at least get the information right. Stupid thieves guess since their idiots is why they can't actually make honest money.
