HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- For more than ten years, former Marshall teammates Mike Bartrum and Troy Brown have been paying it forward on the football field and in the community.
The Bartrum & Brown Camp started as a small affair in Pomeroy, Ohio, but it has blossomed into a long weekend of charity events and fellowship for former pro teammates and Marshall players and coaches.
The May camp is still about the football at its core. More than 400 campers participated in this year's main attraction.
"The biggest thing is watching the kids have fun," Brown said.
The morning session for campers in first through fourth grade is always a little more light-hearted, but that didn't stop Chad Pennington from teaching the art of the three-step drop or Troy Brown from teaching the finer points of back-pedaling in the defensive backfield.
"I ask the kids when they come through the autograph line if they had fun today and they all have big smiles on their faces and we talk about how good a time they had and it motivates us to do it over and over," Brown said after Saturday's morning session.
Mike Bartrum's former Philadelphia Eagles' teammate Chad Lewis also volunteered his time to help. But both Bartrum and Brown, both former NFL Pro-Bowlers, say no matter how big the camp gets they keep the focus on the kids.
"It's something we cherish and to be able to give back and that's what God wants us to do," Bartrum said. "I think what everyone is doing. And each year this thing keeps getting bigger and bigger."
Proceeds from the camp go to help youth programs in Huntington and Bartrum's hometown of Pomeroy, Ohio.

I just want to say this was my son's first year attending the camp and he is already talking about next year! Mike and Troy have made a difference in many young kids lives, my son included. I was worried that my son would not participate due to his profound anxiety disorder, but what they did with him was amazing! Keep up the good work. I would love to see Phillip Ratliff take part in this to bring something back to Louisa and all the children here that are in need...again keep up the great work. I am looking forward to the years to come...We Are....Marshall
The "other" folks of the NFL should take notice...they might better understand the meaning of role model...
I agree with the statement from "thanks." Mike and Troy are both class acts.
