Charleston Celebrates Community Greenspace
After years of hard work, a vacant lot in Charleston has been transformed into a luscious Greenspace.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- What once was an old vacant lot, is now a place for everyone to enjoy.
Sunday, a dedication ceremony was held for the Mary Price Ratrie Greenspace.
Just across from the Clay Center on Washington Street, the Greenspace offers an escape from urban living.
The space is filled with trees, flowers, rock landscapes, and plenty of seating. There are also several waterfalls that are flowing thanks to rain water collected and recycled from a nearby building.
"I like the boulders and I like the green area here," Ann Winton said. "I like that you can sit and view and I hope they will bring some music in occasionally."
The Charleston Area Alliance was a driving force behind the project.
"As people come down Leon Sullivan Way, we'll give them a very positive impression of our community," President and CEO Matt Ballard said. "For people who live downtown this is their backyard."
Federal and state funds along with dozens of private donors are helping to fit the bill for the nearly $3 Million project.

Give "Dollar Danny" time and he will put spikes on the benches and cut down the trees as he has tried to do with all the "green spaces" in Charelston. And exactly WHEN will all three lanes of Leon Sullivan Way be open again because the left lane was still closed this morning even after the grand opening of this "green space". I would like to be able to get to work in Charleston without the mile long line of traffic on the LSW, backed up because the left lane has been closed for the last year or more.

This is nice, looks like charleston could clean up Slack Plaza. It's a mess gum on the brick land scape a mess water features not working. Just a place for the bums. This use to be a very pretty area of Charleston but not now can't even take your lunch and set at the tables. Mayor Jones has let this become a slum of Charleston. The user fees has shown no improvement to Charleston.

Thanks Goodness for the Charleston Area Alliance, one of the few non-profits doing something. These kinds of projects make a strong downtown. Thank you Alliance.
