HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Huntington Police Department is working to get a head start on the future. Saturday was graduation day for members of the HPD Explorer Program.

HPD Explorers is a group of high school and middle school students from Cabell and Wayne Counties who know they want to be police officers.

They do in the field police work and tactical training in addition to 60 hours of classroom work. It's a tough program, and not everyone is cut out for it.

The HPD Explorers started out with 40 students, but only 16 made it to graduation day.

"It meant a lot to me," graduate Joseph Keith said. "Even thought I have accomplished a lot of things, this is the number one on top of my list."

My son just graduated from this program and I am so proud of him . I also have nothing but admiration for the Officers and SGT Beckett who give their time and patience to help lead these teenagers. I hope the idiots who post on here will rethink there stupidity.
