Graduating Senior Dies in Crash

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Graduation is normally a joyous occasion, but it was bittersweet for Capital High School's Class of 2010.

"The pain is there it's just surreal, it really is," Capital High School graduate Arianna Abballa said."This is kind of bittersweet today because J.T. worked so hard for this day I just remember helping him with his final Monday."

J.T. Whitten, 18, died on Tuesday, only days before graduation when he lost control of his car in Charleston just a couple miles from school.

"He was a great person and a great friend to me," Abballa said.

A chair next to fellow students sat with Whitten's cap and gown in remembrance of him.

"I've been going to school with him since elementary," Capital High School graduate Lelia Richards said. "He was a very funny guy he always had you laughing and stuff like that."

The principal and class president gave their remarks to remember Whitten as a student, friend and young man whose life was cut short.

His diploma was presented to his family and a standing ovation filled the Charleston Civic Center.

Whitten was a member of the ROTC and was planning to attend West Virginia State University in the fall.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The funeral services for a Capital High School Student who was killed in a late night accident in Kanawha County will be later this week.

Justin "J.T." Whitten, 18, of Charleston, was set to graduate this Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center.

His funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Friday at Morris Memorial United Methodist Church in Kanawha City. The visitation service will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Myers Funeral Home in Elkview.

Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies tell WSAZ.com Justin's car slid off Mink Shoals Brand Road and hit a guardrail around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. Justin was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Justin was a member of the ROTC and was planning to attend West Virginia State University in the fall.

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An 18-year-old who was set to graduate this Saturday was killed in a late night accident in Kanawha County.

The accident happened around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday on Mink Shoals Branch Road in Mink Shoals.

Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies tell WSAZ.com Justin "J.T." Whitten's car slid off the road and hit a guardrail. Justin was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say he was not wearing his seatbelt and they believe speed played a factor in the crash.

Justin's mother says he was set to graduate from Capital High School on Saturday.

Susan Curry tells WSAZ.com Justin was a wrestler and a member of the ROTC.

The school is planning to honor Justin at its graduation on Saturday.

Justin was from Charleston.

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A driver was killed in a crash overnight in Kanawha County.

911 dispatchers tell WSAZ.com the accident happened around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday along Pennsylvania Avenue in Mink Shoals.

No other details are being released at this time.
