CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- People puckered up Saturday to "Kiss a Pig" - all in the name of diabetes.
The pig was the first animal to provide insulin to humans. So that's why each year, people try to raise the most money to gain the honor.
This years team of winners was Hanna Halstead and Dr. Karen Jiles. The ladies collected $4,500.
For Hanna, it's an effort near and dear to her heart. "It means a lot because I really want to get rid of diabetes because I'm tired of shots and pricking my finger a lot."
Saturday all of the "Kiss a Pig" competitors got together at Appalachian Power Park to pucker-up.
Brutus was the pig of honor, weighing in at 130 pounds.

If I could help find a cure for the many adults and children with diabetes, I would gladly suffer a case of the "SWINE FLU". Such a small PRICE to pay for a cure for many. Signed: Sheri J. Lowery, President-elect, Charleston Gold Dome Lions Club.
PLEASE get your facts straight Can people catch swine flu from pigs? Yes, but it’s very unusual. People with direct exposure to pigs – such as children who come into contact with pigs at a county fair, or adults who work in the pig industry – occasionally are infected with the "swine flu" that North American pigs get. (Again, that's NOT the same flu that's been affecting humans lately.) In rare cases such people have spread the illness to others. The CDC typically records one human swine influenza virus infection every year or two, although from late 2005 to early 2009, 12 cases were reported. The symptoms are similar to those of other types of flu.
Those people are going to bring swine Flu back to this area. I promise last year in another state they had a pig fesitival and most of the participants within weeks had Swine Flu, and the one thing they all had in common... they were in attendance.
