PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - A Parkersburg funeral home is giving the environmentally conscious some peace of mind after death.

Leavitt Funeral Home's green burial services range from nontoxic embalming chemicals to handmade coffins. Co-owner and director Jon Leavitt says the aim is to limit a person's effect on Earth after death.

Leavitt says the most complete green burial would include nontoxic embalming, natural-fiber clothing and a biodegradable casket of bamboo or recycled wood.

While the funeral home has provided just a few green services, Leavitt says people interested in cremation are starting to ask about alternatives. Leavitt says that includes green funerals, which limit emissions from burning natural gas.

Yes, but it has to be within 24 hours after death.

Is it legally required that people be embalmed? Sorry for my ignorance on the subject, but I've never understood this and don't want to be embalmed (or cremated). Can't you just be put in a coffin and buried in your family cemetery?

Why don't you all do the work of a funeral director for 1 week, then talk. You all pay for the service of going out to eat, getting gas, and buying groceries. Same thing. Stop being so narrow minded and opinionated.
