HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The summer is here, and that means combating the boredom blues. How do you keep your children entertained by something other than the television and video games without spending a fortune? Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Chris Scott is just like any parent when school lets out, scratching his head trying to keep his children entertained without breaking the bank.
"If you keep them at home, then you save money, but then they're just watching a lot of TV," Scott said.
At home in front of the television is the last place Chris wants his children. A stop at Empire Books is a start where the children can get a little "edutainment." But he has some other ideas, too.
"We’re going to go to the pool where it’s cool and the movies," Scott said.
If that’s where your list leaves off, there are plenty of other things going on to mix it up.
Huntington's Kitchen has a fun-filled summer planned.
An official there says the Handstand cookbooks allow children to learn about different cultures in addition to cooking. They'll be doing Chinese, Italian, and Mexican recipes.
And you can stir up the fun a little more right next door at the Culinary Institute where you can find youth culinary camps for children ages 6 to 13.
"We’ll teach them math and exploration and how to cook for the whole family and maybe they’ll teach mom a new thing or two," Chef Chris Bugher said.
The classes at the Cooking and Culinary Institute are sponsored by Mountwest Community and Technical College and are just the tip of the iceberg. Other camps include everything from technology and robotics to photography and guitar and cover every school age and adults.
"We teach mosaics, which we don’t typically offer in the studio and we teach building where the children can build clay and paint it in addition to the pottery painting," said Laya Hutchison, owner of the Pottery Place.
The Pottery Place is getting in on the summer camp action, too. With its new location in Pullman Square, come some new features to keep your children entertained and those creative juices flowing.
"The children start in the studio where they make plenty of noise and mess," said Katherine Cox with the Huntington Museum of Art. "But we also bring them to the museum, too.”
The Huntington Museum of Art has a little something for everyone from art camp for children from kindergarten through fifth grade to
clay camp for the middle and high school students and theater and nature camps for everyone in between.
Finally, your local library always offers plenty of summer reading fun. From "Battle of the Books" to just making a splash with reading, there's no better way to keep your child's mind sharp and the parents' nerves calm.

There are tons of things you can do with your children during the summer or anytime for that matter. Walmart and local Dollar Stores carry a huge variety of board games or interactive games that you can play with your children of all ages. Take them swimming, play horseshoes in the backyard, or take em to the park for the day. Both of my kids (3 & 5) love artsy stuff whether it be finger painting, coloring or drawing with sidewalk chalk. It allows them to be creative and interact with one another.
Does anyone know of any cooking classes for kids in Charleston????? My daughter would love something like that, she is my kitchen helper.
