UPDATE 6/7/10 @ 10:15 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A piece of the moon is back in state custody.
State Culture and History spokeswoman Jacqueline Proctor says the rock fragment was collected Sunday from retired Morgantown dentist Robert Conner.
The one-gram fragment was obtained during the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972 and later presented to West Virginia by NASA.
Conner found the rock and accompanying plaque in a box of items taken from his late brother's law office. Conner isn't sure how the fragment got into his brother's keeping.
Proctor says the fragment may eventually take its place next to another moon rock presented to the state after the Apollo 11 mission.
That rock is among a collection of gifts received by governors that are on display at the state Culture Center.
ORIGINAL STORY 6/4/10
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- A missing piece of the moon may have been found in Morgantown.
Retired dentist Robert Conner learned Friday that the one-gram rock fragment found in his late brother's belongings was presented to the state by NASA during the 1970s.
The rock was part of 135 fragments from the Apollo 17 mission given to the 50 states and several countries. The plastic-encased fragment appears on a wooden plaque along with a miniature West Virginia flag that flew on the mission.
It was presented to then Gov. Arch Moore.
Former NASA investigator Joe Gutheinz says the discovery was the latest in a quest that started in 2002. Gutheinz has had his graduate students search for an estimated 100 missing fragments collected during the Apollo 11 and 17 missions.
